AI Is Changing How Patients Find Dentists. Is Your Practice Ready?
By: Jackie Ulasewich Cullen
With AI now available in every major web browser and search experience, more patients are using it every day to find what they need, including dental care. AI-generated search results have quickly changed how patients receive and compare information. For a dental practice, that shift means its overall online presence is more important than ever.
AI vs. Organic Search
AI search results differ from a traditional Google search (also known as organic search) in one major way. Rather than returning a list of links to websites, AI search considers what’s on those websites and summarizes that information. In other words, patients no longer need to click through a ranked list of websites or reviews because AI can process numerous data points in seconds to make a well-reasoned recommendation.
What About SEO?
Does the rise of AI search mean organic search and SEO are dead? On the contrary, they’re still extremely important. However, other factors are gaining importance as AI search becomes more mainstream, and dental practices need to adapt accordingly. A patient who first discovers a dentist through an AI recommendation may still read online reviews, visit the practice website, research the doctor’s credentials, and check social media before making an appointment. AI may provide the recommendation, but the practice’s overall digital presence needs to reinforce it.
The Patient Experience
A practice’s digital presence is one connected patient experience, not a collection of separate marketing assets. That has always been true, but it’s even more apparent when patients can use AI to quickly process information from multiple sources. If a practice’s online presence is incomplete, outdated, or inconsistent, those gaps are now easier to detect.
Adapting to AI Search
AI recognizes certain content as authoritative and prioritizes it in its analysis. A robust, consistent online presence gives AI more of that content to capture, compare, and interpret. Video is one format AI looks for, as are reviews, patient testimonials, accurate practice information, and content that answers common patient questions. That means dental practices should focus on filling gaps in their digital marketing rather than relying on a single strong channel to carry the entire patient journey.
SEO & Beyond
SEO remains important because AI, like conventional search engines, recognizes keywords, relevance, and structure. The difference is that AI goes further to analyze the overall message and context of digital content and can compare tone, consistency, specificity, and trust signals across multiple platforms. For that reason, practices should focus on creating authentic, useful content that helps patients learn about the practice, understand common dental topics, and feel more confident about typical concerns.
Consistency Matters Most
AI may not be human, but it makes recommendations based on many of the same signals patients use to decide whether a practice will be a good fit:
- Accurate, complete, easy-to-find contact information
- A well-developed, up-to-date website with clear information about services
- Current, authentic patient reviews and testimonials
- A consistent voice and values expressed across all digital channels
When those signals align, AI has a clearer picture of who the practice serves and why it may be a good recommendation. When they do not, even a strong website or a high review rating may not be enough to tell the full story.
AI may be changing how patients search for a dentist, but it hasn’t changed how they make decisions. Patients will always seek authentic, trustworthy information that communicates the practice’s personality, expertise, and values. Practices that treat every digital touchpoint as part of a larger experience will be better positioned to appear in AI-generated recommendations and build real patient relationships.
