When Does a Patient Decide That They Trust Your Practice?
A patient starts forming an opinion about your dental practice far earlier than you may think. With search results, AI-generated answers, online reviews, photos, videos, social media posts, and the practice website, they’re gathering information. Each impression helps the patient decide whether you and your team are credible, approachable, and trustworthy.
Beyond credentials and accomplishments, patients want to know that the people they’ll encounter at your practice will listen to their concerns, explain results and treatment options clearly, and help them decide without pressure. This is especially true when the decision involves extensive or elective treatment, out-of-network care, or a complex procedure that requires a big commitment.
The Decision to Trust Starts Online
It’s not news that most people use the internet to validate, compare, and narrow their healthcare choices. According to Press Ganey, online reviews are the top factor in provider selection during the research phase. Additionally, patients who have been referred to a practice will still check reviews before scheduling an appointment. In fact, the average patient will visit up to three websites and read about five reviews before choosing a provider. For dental practices, this means that a recommendation from a family member, friend, coworker, or healthcare professional may spark interest, but the online experience will likely determine whether that interest becomes an appointment.
Reinforce Trust
Marketing can inspire confidence, but if the patient experience doesn’t live up to the hype, that confidence can quickly become doubt. If the website feels warm and reassuring but the phone call is cold and rushed, the patient may not schedule an appointment. If photos and videos imply a compassionate team and personalized experience but the actual appointment feels perfunctory, the patient will never return.
Trust grows when every touchpoint communicates a consistent message. Online reviews, social media channels, website, phone conversations, in-person interactions: it should all feel connected to the patient. Rather than make it look impressive, everything a patient sees and experiences outside the practice should accurately reflect the care a patient will receive inside.
Create Less Uncertainty
Authentic online content helps patients understand what to expect, who they will meet, how decisions are made, and whether the practice’s approach is right for them. Testimonial videos, patient stories, reviews, educational articles, and realistic photos allow patients to learn about the practice before visiting it. A patient may be interested in cosmetic dentistry, implants, comprehensive care, or a second opinion, but still hesitate to contact your practice because they’re unsure what the process will feel like. When patients can access high-quality, truthful content, they have more reasons to trust.
Reviews Reveal Reality
Online reviews work because they come straight from the patients’ mouths. They answer questions the practice can’t answer with as much credibility, like whether patients feel respected, the team is friendly, and the doctors treat patients with compassion. Reviews reveal the true patient experience, positive or otherwise.
Press Ganey found that more than half of consumers who use online search to find a new primary care provider would delay scheduling an appointment if they couldn’t find quality patient reviews. Additionally, 90% of consumers say they want accurate online information about clinicians, and nearly half will move on if information is missing or outdated. Dental patients are no different. They want proof that a practice is organized, responsive, trustworthy, and attentive. When reviews, photos, videos, and website content are current and consistent, making a decision is less risky.
The Marketing Promise Vs. the Patient Experience
A marketing campaign, video, or homepage may resonate with a patient, but it takes more than that to earn their trust. Look at how clearly the website communicates the practice’s values, the dates of the most recent patient reviews, how your team interacts with patients on the phone, how prepared they are to answer questions, how doctors present treatment plans, and what follow-up procedures you have in place.
Assess the patient journey from search results to post-appointment follow-up and look for inconsistencies. Close any gaps by:
- Updating reviews, listings, bios, service pages, photos, and insurance information
- Adding videos and patient stories to show the practice’s personality, process, and approach to care
- Training the team so phone calls, consultations, and follow-ups reflect the level of care promised online
- Explaining treatment recommendations to help patients understand their choices without feeling overwhelmed
Does the Outside Reflect the Inside?
When the online experience matches the patient experience, it’s easier to build trust. That confidence can make the difference between a potential patient who keeps searching and one who schedules an appointment. With a strong digital presence that reflects the real patient experience, dental practices can make the quality of care inside the office visible long before the first appointment.
